THE DOWERY is a small privately operated Nursery located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Established in 1991, our primary purpose is to collect, propagate and deliver the finest (and sometimes most obscure) species available.  For the past few years we have begun to emphasize species from various countries of the Pacific Rim, where it seems there is an endless number of interesting and unusual orchid genera - and occasionally even undiscovered species.  In our current list we offer one new species - PHAL DOWERYENSIS, and a number of rare or uncommon species.

For the past two years we have imported considerable numbers of 'jewel' orchids (Anoectochilus, Dossinia, Goodyeara, Ludisia, Macodes and Malaxis).  These terrestrials, whose leaves are most attractive, are generally easy to grow, if given ample moisture, shade, a humid environment with good air movement and a medium that is reflective of their natural setting.  This year we have added two very diminutive unidentified species; one that may prove to be of the Zeuxine genus and the second may be a Malaxis species.  Both will bloom this year and when they do, we should be able to identify them correctly.  Both appear to be very easy growers.

Importing live material has become increasingly difficult.  We will do our best to continue bringing in new species.

Please consider this list as 'organic' and constantly changing.  With new material arriving throughout spring, summer and early autumn, we will attempt to update our web page frequently.  If you have questions concerning the availability of anything on the list (or have questions about the possible availability of something not on the list), just e-mail us.  We usually respond quickly to this method of communication.  Catching us by phone is quite another matter!
